A French bakery located in Northwest Portland is opening a second shop in Lake Oswego.

Artisserie Fine Bakery plans to serve French goodies at the former Blue Star donuts location on 1st Street in late June or early July if possible.

The bakery specializes in French pastries such as croissants and macarons as well as cakes, breads, coffee and sandwiches for lunch.

Pastry chef Vitaliya Popovych grew up in Ukraine and moved to Portland in 2006. After that, she worked with a French pastry chef at La Provence and always dreamed of having a small business where she could bake and sell her sweet treats.

“Back in Ukraine I always liked to bake at home, like making desserts and pastries,” Popovych said. “I always had a sweet tooth. I always liked to bake and enjoyed eating it as well. It’s kind of my weakness.”

Her dream came to fruition two years ago when Artisserie Fine Bakery opened on Northwest 23rd Avenue in Portland.

Popovych said she loves fruity flavors and that her pastries are sweet — but not too sweet. Some of her specialties include an almond cake filled with vanilla mascarpone mousse and layered with strawberry & lemon cream, beignets and a croissant filled with mascarpone and raspberry jam.

“If you have a sweet tooth and like desserts and pastries, visit us,” Popovych said. “We combine sweetness and lightness. You can have two-to-three different ones and won’t be overwhelmed. They’re not too heavy and sweet.”

Blue Star announced the closure of its Lake Oswego shop in late 2024.

The downtown Lake Oswego coffee shop scene is full of options including Peet’s Coffee, Morse Coffee Company, Lola’s Cafe Bar and St. Honoré Bakery.
