Richardson’s Furniture: Where family tradition meets your home needs

Richardson's Furniture & Mattress Gallery started in a family basement in 1959, evolving into a four-generation-run operation that prioritizes customer service in Columbia County.

At Richardson’s Furniture &Mattress Gallery, the history of family craftsmanship is etched into every surface and woven into the fabric of each sofa.

Spanning four generations, the family-owned business began in the basement of Lowell and Martha Richardson in 1959. After the Richardsons’ daughter needed upholstery work done on her car, word of mouth quickly spread among friends — before they knew it, the whole home transformed into a full-time upholstery shop.

The business has grown over the years, witnessing three moves until settling at the current location on Columbia Boulevard. In 1970, the family’s daughter Eileen Richardson and her husband, Chris Kirby, joined the venture, bringing fresh ideas and energy. By 1998, the torch had been passed to their daughter Annie Davis and her husband, Joe Davis. Today, children Zach and Emily Davis represent the fourth generation, continuing the family’s legacy.

“That’s four generations who have run this business and provided the kind of consistent quality, care of service and genuine value that’s almost unheard of in today’s market,” Annie Davis, co-owner, shared.

The store offers a wide range of products, from lamps and pictures to dining room tables, sofas, mattresses and adjustable beds — everything needed to transform a house into a home.

The St. Helens business takes pride in being family owned and operated, highlighting their values and close ties to the community in Columbia County.

“We love being able to serve our community and work with repeat customers throughout the years. We often have customers whose parents and grandparents bought their furniture at Richardson’s and now they are buying from us too,” Annie Davis said.

“We appreciate the opportunity to help supply local jobs and also to help keep money in the community that we grew up in,” she continued. “Through the support of Columbia County, we are able to give back by sponsoring many local events, sport teams and charities.”

According to Annie Davis, the business works hard to bring Oregon-manufactured products to its 20,000-square-foot showroom, offering pieces from local producers.

“We are able to showcase so many different styles of furniture and have something for everyone,” she said. “We also offer customization of many of our furniture. You can choose your fabric and pillows to make the piece your own.”

While product quality is a top priority, creating a welcoming atmosphere that reflects Richardson’s strong community and family roots is equally important.

“Providing great customer service is something we have strived to do since 1959. We continue offering the best values, a great selection of products and the best possible service both before and after you have chosen your furniture,” Annie Davis said. “We try to deal with any issues as soon as possible. We rely on word of mouth and repeat customers, so we do our best to make and keep our customers happy.”

Rather than dealing with the pressure from sellers on commission, customers can browse at their leisure to find the right items to fit their home and budget.

“We believe shopping for your home should be a fun and relaxing experience,” Annie Davis said.
