The Gresham Farmers Market is back every weekend through October.

The largest farmers market in East Multnomah County returns this weekend with all sorts of stuff to peruse and buy: fresh produce, handcrafted goods, pastries, coffee, booze, artwork, jewelry, meat and cheese, barbeque, plants, bouquets, and so much more.

The Gresham Farmers Market runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in May through October at the Gresham Arts Plaza, 401 Northeast Second St. The market shuts down the roads surrounding the plaza, allowing the vendors to spread out and keeping plenty of space for kids to play.

This is the 39th season for the market, which has about 150 vendors (with beloved returning booths and exciting new vendors) lined up and plenty of entertainment planned for the coming months. There will also be live music, including a performance by the Portland Opera in August.

“We are excited to be opening — our goal is to deliver the biggest and best market in the Portland Metro and Vancouver area for the city of Gresham,” said Greg Charland, market manager.

The Gresham Farmers Market had its seed planted by the foresight of Polly Casterline, who at the time was the legislator for District 10. After visiting Europe, she became enamored by the charm of local farmers and merchants operating markets through street vending.

That idea was cultivated, and Casterline and other community members debuted the market in 1986. The first season was located in the Gresham City Hall parking lot, and over the next 12 years it bounced around town. From 1999 to 2018 it was held in a downtown parking lot, before moving to its current home at the Arts Plaza.
