Feeling peckish? Spielman Bagels opens fifth location in Beaverton

Spielman Bagels’ owner Paul Ceserani visits with customers March 6 at the new Beaverton location.

The location is familiar to coffee lovers in Beaverton, just off Canyon Road and a few steps from neighboring Fred Meyer.

What was formerly Jim and Patty’s Coffee is now Spielman Bagels & Coffee, offering not only bagels but a variety of delicious breakfast and lunch options for motorists navigating the busy highway.

Owner Paul Ceserani talked about the origins of his new bagel location.

“I’m partners with Jim and Patty’s; they had up to five locations at its peak,” Paul Ceserani, owner of four Spielman Bagels locations, said. “We closed one during COVID and one in Happy Valley reached the end of its lease about a year ago.”

It was decided to close the Beaverton Jim and Patty’s location in November 2024.

“I needed to figure out what to do with the space and negotiated with the landlords to convert it to a Spielman Bagels,” he said. “We make some of the products for Jim and Patty’s — we were already delivering here — so we made the conversion.”

The business officially opened Monday, Feb. 24. Ceserani’s business offers 21 varieties of bagels and there’s usually seasonal options.

“All of our bagels are sourdough,” he said. “We make them from a sourdough starter that we’ve had going since 2011.”

All of the bagels are vegan, but there are two varieties that have cheddar cheese. The café offers a variety of made-to-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches using their popular bagels.

Ceserani noted there are some menu items that customers long for.

“We have a variety of sandwiches that have been around for a while,” he said. “The Larry David (from ‘Seinfeld’ days) is one of our biggest sellers. It’s a white fish sandwich that has some tomatoes, capers and red onions on it. That’s a really popular sandwich.”

Ceserani added, “One of my favorites is called the Captain Planet: It’s a hummus and cucumber sandwich that has arugula, sprouts, tomatoes and red onion. It’s got a nice texture to it, and a nice crunch.”

Breakfast sandwiches are wildly popular at Spielman Bagels. Bacon, egg and cheddar, as well as sausage, egg and cheddar, help morning visitors satisfy their hunger pangs.

“We make a variety of other products,” he said. “We make the biscuits that we sell at our shops, we make a sausage breakfast roll.”

And they’re not forgetting coffee, which goes quite well with bagel sandwiches.

“We have a whole line of coffee, as well,” according to Ceserani. “Our supplier is Thornton Family Coffee Roasters, so we’re pretty proud of not only our drip coffee, but our espresso-based coffees that we serve as well.”

Catering is another specialty of Spielman Bagels.

“We do a significant volume of catering business, not only from our wholesale location, but a lot of times customers reach out to our cafés and they will coordinate with our wholesale operation and will prepare the catering order and deliver it to the stores to be picked up by the customers,” Ceserani said.

They have only been in business a few weeks at the Beaverton location, but Ceserani and staff are getting familiar with customer desires.

“The reaction has been very good,” he said, noting that of all his stores, the first week was busiest at the Beaverton location. “We’re off to a good start.”

Manager Annette Colgan agrees that business is hopping.

“The neighborhood is really great and accommodating,” she said. “People have been coming in and telling us how happy they are that we’re here. We’re just really excited to serve the community.”
