Journeys, the former bistro in the heart of Multnomah Village, is being reborn as La Palma, a Mexican-inspired cocktail bar and eatery. It is scheduled to debut in early October.

Journeys first opened in a remodeled two-story house at 7771 S.W. Capitol Highway in 2015. The modest travel-themed bistro quickly earned a large and loyal following, thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, dozens of rotating beer taps, small plates, and large front yard patio. Owners Bob Anthony and Shannon Parks struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic like all other restaurants but hung on until closing it about a year ago.

Now Journeys has been bought, remodeled again, and is scheduled to be reopened in early October by partners who also own a catering service and three other restaurants in the Portland area. Co-owner Alex Chong said the new incarnation has fewer taps because so many other places offer a wide selection of beers now, including several in the village that did not exist when Journeys first opened.

According to Chong, the new La Palma emphasizes Agave Spirits, including tequila and mezcal and simple fresh plates of Mexican fare. He said the Mexican theme was chosen to fill a perceived gap in the village and because a co-owner of Mexican descent suggested it.

Other changes include fresh paint, refurbished floors, a remodeled restroom, and kitchen-related upgrades. One thing remains the same — the front yard patio, although the landscaping has been replanted.

Chong, who lives near Multnomah Village, has long wanted to open a restaurant there, especially as more and more people have moved into the area in recent years.

“What we want to do is help offer a complete date night in the village — a full evening of dining and recreation without having to go anywhere else,” Chong said.

Those involved with the project toasted the upcoming opening one recent morning with shot glasses filled with water and lime slices. They included Chong, co-owner Patrick Miller, bar manager Matt Galati, chef Alejondo Anderson, and cook Daniel Zamora.
