Stark Street Bridge over Sandy River to close Oct. 4-5 for annual inspection

Stark Street Bridge will be closed in early October for an inspection.

Stark Street Bridge will close for its annual inspection from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 4-5.

All motorized vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be unable to cross during the inspection, so alternative routes must be taken.

All public bridges in the United States are inspected by independent parties to document their structural condition. Multnomah County maintains Stark Street Bridge, a 277-foot steel truss bridge that spans the Sandy River two miles east of Troutdale, providing access to the Historic Columbia River Highway.

The steel bridge was built after its predecessor, an old wooden structure, fell on Good Roads’ Day in 1914, dropping a 5-ton auto truck into the river.
