From bubble car to Benz: Car2Go’s new cars

Car sharing service Car2Go now offers the Mercedez-Benz CLA coupe in Portland for 41 cents a minute.

Car sharing service car2go is adding proper cars to its line up. The service, know for its two-seater bubble cars, from today offers two new Mercedes-Benz models, the CLA and GLA, in Portland.

Car2Go’s two-seater vehicles have been challenged by Seattle-based ReachNows’ fleet of four-seater Minis and BMWs in the last year.

Like other car sharing service such as ReachNow and Zip Car, Car2Go members can pull up a map on mobile device showing where vehicles are in real time. They can reserve, unlock and start them using a swipe card, or phone app, and a PIN. Cars are charged at 41 cents per minute. The new four door cars will also costs 41 cents a minute, at least in the beginning, said a spokesperson.

ReachNow also charges 41 cents a minute for its cars.

Austin, Portland, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington, D.C. area are the first North American locations to experience 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA and GLA car2gos.

Car2go is owned by Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz of Germany. Daimler bought Freightliner trucks of Portland in 2007 and runs it as Daimler Trucks North America LLC.

Daimler also owns moovel, the smart transit ticketing system which absorbed Portland’s GlobeSherpa in 2016.

“At Mercedes-Benz we see the four key pillars for future mobility as connectivity, autonomous driving, carsharing, and electrification,” said Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is a 4-door coupe and the GLA is a sporty 5-door small SUV with added cargo capacity.

Car2Go has over 2.2 million members including 800,000 in North America.
